All You Need Is LOVE – Opening The Heart Chakra

It’s officially the month of love. Time to stir our slumbering hearts, dust off the cobwebs and get ready for a February full to bursting with abundant love. Love for all beings and love for ourselves.  One of the best ways to do this is to focus on opening our heart chakras through the postures of yoga.

A bit about the heart chakra

The heart chakra links the lower three chakras (connected to the physical body) and the upper three chakras (connected to the mind). It is therefore the meeting point of these energies and thought to be the home of the spirit.

Sanskrit name: Anahata (‘unstruck’)

Element: Air

Color: Green

Meaning: Love, balance, relationship, compassion, empathy, selflessness and devotion.

Body: It is related to the skin (touch) and hands (altruistic action) and the heart of course

Gland: Thymus

Three postures to help open the heart chakra

Trikonasana – Triangle Pose

This is an invigorating posture designed to promote cardiovascular exercise and open the heart. The chest expands while the hips open and the hamstrings and spine are lengthened.  It can also improve balance and concentration and brings strength to the ankles, legs, and arms. You can transition from this pose into the next heart-opening posture.

Ardha Chandrasana – Half Moon Pose

This pose is also a powerful heart opener, expanding the chest as the limbs are stretched in all directions.  It strengthens the abdomen, ankles and thighs and helps to relieve stress and improve digestion. It can all also help effectively reduce stress hormones and lift your mood.

Ustrasana – Camel Pose

Possibly the most powerful heart-opening posture of them all, exposing your chest to the elements, leaving you vulnerable but also open to giving and receiving love. It also strengthens your back muscles and stimulates the abdominal organs.  Don’t be surprised if you feel emotional after this pose!
